Centers and Corridors – building density

Pierce County’s middle county urban zoning proposal was initially called City of Pierce. When that rattled every community association in the area, they changed the name to Centers and Corridors. What hasn’t changed is the densities of development it is bringing with it.

In addition to the density, there are other issues being created by this high density development in the unincorporated county, sewers and water. The Lakewood Water District recently had a meeting at Collins Elementary regarding the pipeline it is building to deliver water to the area. Summit View, Spanaway, Firgrove and Rainier View Water have all said they do not have enough water resources to supply this much population over the next several years.

Lakewood Water is actually well water from the same aquifer all those other water companies tap into. The only dofference is the state will not let them dig more wells. Lakewood was the only water district with enough well capacity to supply water. Due to Federal Regulations, City of Tacoma Water from the Green River Watershed is not allowed to be delivered into this separate, sole source aquifer area.

In Frederickson alone, there are 8 projects asking for zoning changes to increase even from this density.

Here is a link to the Centers and Corridors Plan.
